Transcript of October 2010 USFA Monthly Focus on Fire Safety Narrated by Acting U.S. Fire Administrator Glenn Gaines [video opens with artwork for the October Focus on Fire Safety] Smoke alarms are important means of preventing home fire fatalities. They provide an early warning signal so you and your family can escape. The United States Fire Administration estimates that over 380,000 fires occur in residential buildings each year. [Video of firefighters fighting a fire, people replacing and checking their smoke alarms, and a family going over a fire escape plan while Chief Gaines speaks] These fires result in more than 2,200 civilian deaths and over 13,000 injuries. When a smoke alarm sounds it is time for you to spring into action. You can prevent tragedy simply by testing and maintaining your smoke alarms and practicing your fire escape plan. Everyone in the home should know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. [Cuts back to Chief Gaines] Make sure that your home fire escape plan is up to date. Practice your plan often. This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is “Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With."
