Track 1 “What’s That Sound?” (beep, beep, beep, beep) Ruthie: It’s working. Gabriella: Yeah, it’s working. Ruthie: That was so loud I jumped like a startled chicken, which is just the way it should be. Telly: Hi Ruthie, hi Gabriella. Ruthie: Hi Telly, hi Miles. Telly: We heard an alarm clock go off in here. Did you just wake up? Ruthie: Oh no, no Telly that wasn’t an alarm clock. That was my smoke detector. Telly: Smoke detector? Ruthie: Uh huh. Gabriella was helping me to put new batteries in it. Gabriella: Yeah, you’re supposed to change them twice a year. Ruthie: There, it’s hanging back in its place where I’ll be sure to hear it if it beeps again, because that’s very important. Telly: Why’s that so important Ruthie? Ruthie: Well you see Telly, smoke detectors make a loud beeping sound whenever there’s smoke around. Gabriella: And if there’s smoke, there could be a fire. Ruthie: Gabriella is right, and smoke and fire are very dangerous. So what the smoke detector is saying when it beeps, is that there is danger around. Miles: So what do you do if it starts beeping Ruthie? Telly: That’s a good question Miles. What do you do when a smoke detector starts beeping? Ruthie: Its very simple Telly, first, you get down on your hands and knees so you’ll be under the smoke. Then you crawl out of the building as fast as you can and you stay out. Telly: Hey I just got an idea for a game. Gabriella: A game? Miles: Cool, a game? Great, what is it? Telly: It’s called smoke detector. Gabriella: How do you play that? Telly: Easy. First we pretend that a smoke detector started beeping. Then we practice crawling under the smoke, and getting out of the building, as fast as we can. Miles: Alright, yeah, yeah, that’s cool. Ruthie: That is a great idea Telly. Who wants to be our pretend smoke detector? Gabriella: I do, I do. Telly: Ok Gabriella. I mean smoke detector. Anytime you’re ready start beeping. Gabriella: Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep. Telly: Uh oh. It’s a smoke detector. That means there’s smoke, but no need to panic. We’ll just uh, what do we do again Ruthie? Ruthie: We get down on our hands and knees, then crawl out of the building as fast as we can. Come on. Telly: Yeah, come on. Stay calm everybody. Hey, we did it. Yes. Ruthie: That was very good guys. And since we were just practicing, we can go back in now. Come on. And Gabriella you were a great smoke detector. Gabriella: Thanks Ruthie. Telly: But best of all now when we hear a smoke detector beeping, we’ll know just what to do. (phone ringing) Oh boy, oh boy, listen to that, a smoke detector! Miles and Gabriella: Alright, yeah, we know what to do. Telly: No need to panic. Ruthie: Guys, guys. (whistle) That’s not a smoke detector. Hello “Finders Keepers.” Oh hi, Mrs. Snuffaluffagus. Yes we’re open today. You’re welcome. Bye-bye. That was just my telephone guys. Now remember it’s very important to listen carefully and to stay calm. Telly: Good point Ruthie. Next time we’ll listen carefully and stay very calm. (bells ringing) Smoke detector! Smoke detector! Miles and Gabriella: We know what to do. Yeah get low and go. Ruthie: Guys, Guys! (whistle) That is not the smoke detector, that’s my big old grandfather clock. Telly: I know what you’re going to say now Ruthie. (All together) We need to stay calm and listen carefully. Ruthie: Very good guys. You learned fast and while we’re talking about listening… Telly: What Ruthie? What? Ruthie: Let’s listen to this. Song: Smoke detectors sound this way, (beep) that’s how smoke detectors say, there could be a fire somewhere around, that’s what they mean when they make this sound. (beep) Hear that? Remember when you hear this sound. It could be there’s a fire around. Ask a grown up, they’ll tell you what you’re supposed to do. (beep) There it goes again. Smoke detectors in your house, keep as quiet as a mouse, unless smoke or fire gets them to shout. That’s what they do so that you’ll find out. I hope you have one in your house.
