The volunteer fire service, representing almost 70 percent of all U.S. firefighters, has its own distinct issues related to health and safety, including:

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is working on a project with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) to study these challenges and create strategies to reduce on-duty casualties. Our study will also look at health and safety challenges for volunteer wildland firefighters.

We expect to publish the results of the study in early 2016.
