Status of Legislation to Ban or Limit the Sale of Novelty and Toylike Lighters

South Carolina has introduced legislation banning or limiting the sale of novelty and toylike lighters.

2012 Legislative Session

Jan 9: Senate Bill 94, the Novelty Lighter Prohibition Act, was refiled.

2011 Legislative Session

Feb 24: Representatives Gambrell and Brantley introduced the House companion Bill 3749, which enacts the Novelty Lighter Prohibition Act, provides definitions for certain terms and for the prohibition of the sale or distribution of novelty lighters, and provides penalties.

Jan 11: Senator Alexander introduced Senate Bill 94, which amends the Novelty Lighter Prohibition Act and provides for the definition and the prohibition of the sale or distribution of novelty lighters.

2010 Legislative Session

Senate Bill 766 was sent to committee on February 2 and remained there until it died in committee at the end of a two-year legislative cycle. The South Carolina State Fire Marshal intends to submit it again for pre-filing in November for the new legislative session that starts in January 2011.
