We are pleased to announce that the 9th annual Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) conference is June 2 - 4, 2007 and will be held at the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA) National Fire Academy (NFA) campus in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Preliminary Conference Agenda

The conference agenda, developed by the FESHE Steering Committee in December, is preliminary as some of the presenters are not yet confirmed. The committee reviewed last year's evaluations and suggestions and the agenda reflects attendee views and recommendations.

Much of the conference segments remain the same; however, one comment we read frequently was a request for information and tools that can be used once you returned to work. This resulted in a new segment called "Ready to Use Tools" with presentations that can be implemented in your programs relatively quickly, particularly in the classroom. At the institutional level, we are collaborating with the Emergency Management Institute's Integrated Emergency Management Branch in the NETC Simulation Laboratory to simulate a disaster at "Columbia State University" in "Central City" and provide an assessment of what kind of future training fire science directors and coordinators need to lead disaster planning efforts at their institutions.

Participants of the highly successful Gettysburg Battlefield field trips suggested similar trips to other national military parks. Hence, for this year's professional development workshop, FESHE leadership applications will be linked to the Civil War battles at South Mountain (just west of Frederick, Maryland) and Antietam (outside Hagerstown, Maryland).

Conference Fees

There is no registration fee. As in the past, travel and meal costs ($93.60) are borne by the attendees; however, USFA will provide lodging at no charge and scheduled bus transportation to and from Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Airport on June 1 and June 5. Do not book your travel plans until confirmation of your acceptance is received from our admissions office.

Lodging at the National Emergency Training Center (NETC) for this conference is limited to 150 rooms. One other representative from your institution or agency may attend the conference provided he/she submits a separate application; however, depending on room availability, additional representatives from your organization or those whose applications are received after the 150 mark must stay off campus at their own expense.
