After firefighters were ordered out of the building, the Thermite RS3 robot entered and contained the fire from the inside.
The LAFD is the first department in the nation to use the Thermite RS3. This robot is capable of formidable fire suppression. It can discharge 2,500 gallons of water or foam per minute and perform many other essential emergency response tasks. It's equipped with a thermal camera and a visual camera and can see hazards with real-time high-definition video. The RS3 can also traverse rough terrain and can pull up to 8,000 pounds with a winch.
These combined capabilities in the RS3 allow first responders to remain up to 500 meters away from danger and operate the robot remotely. The RS3 is a great example of using technology in new ways to preserve life safety.
