Track 8 “Firefighter Ruthie” Telly: Hey Miles, Gabby, who’s that sliding down Ruthie’s firepole? And wearing those strange looking clothes? Gabriella: I don’t know Telly. Miles: Me neither. Telly: Let’s find out. Excuse me, we came here to Ruthie’s store looking for her. Have you seen Ruthie anywhere? Ruthie: Telly this is me, Ruthie. Telly: Ruthie? You sure don’t sound like Ruthie. Miles: You don’t look like Ruthie either. Ruthie: That’s because I’m wearing my firefighter suit and my firefighter air mask. Here, I’ll take off the mask. There ya see? Telly: It is Ruthie. Ruthie: Of course it’s me. Who did you think it was? Telly: I don’t know. I’ve never seen anyone in a firefighting suit before. Gabriella: Yeah, and it sure looks strange. Miles: And why are you wearing that air mask? Ruthie: Well you see Miles, I’m a volunteer firefighter. That means I help firefighters sometimes and firefighters have to wear air masks so they can breathe when there’s too much smoke. Telly: And why are you wearing that big helmet? Ruthie: Oh, that’s to protect you in case something falls on your head Telly. Gabriella: And what about that great big coat you have? Ruthie: This is to keep from getting soaked with all the water firefighters use to put out fires. Telly: To tell you the truth Ruthie, I got a little scared when I saw you wearing all that. Gabriella: Me too. Ruthie: That’s another thing guys, it’s very important to know what firefighters look like so we don’t get scared. Cause they’re there to help us. Telly: I’ll remember what they look like. Ruthie: Hey wait a minute, I just thought of something I learned as a firefighter that we could all do right now. (all the kids answer, “yeah great, what, what?”) Ruthie: It’s called, “get low and go.” Telly: Get low and go? Ruthie: Uh huh. See, when you’re getting out of a fire or if there’s smoke, it’s very important to get yourself down really low, because smoke usually stays up high. Gabriella: How do you mean low, Ruthie? Ruthie: Well, you get down on your hands and knees so you can crawl out. Think you can do that? (all the kids answer, “yeah ok, of course we can, sounds great.” Ruthie: Great. Then I think we’re ready to start. Song: If there’s smoke in the house, uh oh, there’s one thing that you should know, should know, if there’s fire or smoke, you know, that’s no time to be slow, be slow. Get down on your hands and knees, so you can be under the smoke, under the smoke, get low just like a mouse, then crawl out of the house. Don’t be a slow poke. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. See the smoke from the fire? It usually stays higher, that’s what getting low is all about. If things get fiery or smoky, that’s no time to be pokey, so get low and go and then stay out. Get down on your hands and knees, so you can be under the smoke. Get low just like a mouse, then crawl out of the house. Don’t be a slow poke. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. Get low and go. And go. Ruthie: Boy, you guys can really get low. Telly: You didn’t do too bad yourself, Ruthie. Ruthie: Well, I’ve got years of practice. So, do you think you guys know what to do if there’s fire or smoke? Telly: You bet. Gabriella: We get low and crawl under the smoke. Miles: Out of the building as fast as we can. Ruthie: You got it. And one more thing, once you get out ? (“you stay out,” all the kids answer). You guys are getting really good at this. Telly: Well, wait a minute, what if I get out and then I remember that I forgot to bring my favorite doll Freddy out with me? Ruthie: I’m afraid you’ll have to stay out Telly. Miles: What if I leave all my baseball cards? Gabriella: Or my coat and it’s real cold outside? Ruthie: Even then guys, once you’re out, you have to stay out. Telly: Uh oh. Ruthie: What’s wrong? Telly: I think I smell something strange. Gabriella: Me too. Ruthie: You’re right. It smells like smoke. (beep, beep, beep, beep, beep) (all the kids answer, “smoke detector!”) Miles: Yeah, it’s the smoke detector. Yeah, what do we do? Telly: Now everybody stay calm. Are we sure that is the smoke detector? (all the kids answer, “it’s the smoke detector.”) Ruthie: Then come on everybody. I think you know what to do now. Gabriella: We get low and crawl under the smoke. Miles: And out of the building. Telly: As fast as we can. Ruthie: And don’t forget, once we get out, we stay out. Telly: Boy, it’s a good thing we knew what to do when that smoke detector warned us that there was smoke and fire. Ruthie: Yes, we got out quickly and safely. Miles: So we can go back in now Ruthie? Ruthie: Not until the firefighters tell us that everything is “ok.” But don’t worry, they have it all under control. There’s just one little problem. Gabriella: What Ruthie? Ruthie: The cherry pie I was baking got burned to a crisp. I forgot all about it. That’s what started the smoke. Miles: Don’t feel too bad Ruthie. Telly: Yeah. Hey, wait a minute, I’ve got an idea. Ruthie: What Telly? Telly: They make a great cherry pie at Ruppert’s Store. Gabriella: That is a great idea. Miles: Yeah, we could all go have some. Ruthie: All right. You’re on guys. And it’s my treat. Telly: Well then, what are we waiting for? Let’s go! Gabriella: All right cherry pie. Miles: Yeah, that’s my favorite. Telly: You are buying, right?
