The nonprofit organization Disability Rights of West Virginia (DRWV) collaborated with fire and EMS departments and other disability-support organizations in the state to develop a communication card that assists people with disabilities during an emergency .
The card is designed to help gather medical, physical and emotional information from a patient who is deaf, hard of hearing, autistic or who may have an intellectual disability. Patients touch pictures on the card to express their wants and needs. The card gives medical professionals the ability to help through quick communication tips.
While West Virginia's card is available for download, your state may have something similar. Check with the appropriate state office or nonprofit organizations to find out if these products are available. If not, suggest that they create communication cards.
