The National Fire Academy's (NFA) revised Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Program will be an intensive and demanding two-year cohort program that requires a commitment of both time and energy.
All students accepted in fiscal year 2019 have received COHORT assignments. Those placed in COHORT A will start their educational journey with the first mediated course of instruction on Dec. 1, 2019.
The EFO application period will open in January 2020 for placement in fiscal year 2021 (Oct. 1, 2020 – Sept. 30, 2021). The online application process includes new prerequisite courses and a new application package. Prerequisite courses will be announced when the application period opens. Core program requirements, such as a bachelor's degree, remain in place.

The program includes four on-campus resident sessions, two per year. Residential sessions will be six to 10 days in length. Each year of the program includes intersession work done through our mediated learning platform. Mediated learning will require between six to 10 weeks of active participation. In addition, a graduate-level thesis will be developed while enrolled in the program.
Work has started on the revised EFO course design and framework in greater detail. The first group of subject matter experts started their efforts on April 29, 2019. Their work will continue throughout the year on both the mediated and residential portions of the program.
