Due to space and budget limitations, the National Fire Academy (NFA) can’t accept all qualified students for courses at our Emmitsburg campus. Also, many volunteer and career fire service personnel don’t have the time to attend on-campus programs. To reach these students, the NFA sponsors free courses at the local level. Basic course content and materials are the same as on-campus courses. The NFA provides two instructors per course and all training materials.
Off-campus six-day courses are requested through the Training Resources and Data Exchange (TRADE) network. TRADE members consist of state and local training and education administrators who are in an excellent position to determine the training needs of fire service personnel in their regions. Local hosts select and coordinate training facilities, arrange for support, provide instructional equipment, secure student housing and meals, and provide on-site administrative support. Students are responsible for costs associated with individual travel, lodging and meals.
Information about application procedures, courses, dates and locations of deliveries is available through the off-campus six-day course schedule or by contacting the NFA’s Off-Campus Program manager at 800-238-3358, ext. 1301, or 301-447-1301.
Free two-day classroom training opportunities from the NFA are available for students who may not have the time to attend six-day courses. These courses are identical to our on-campus two-day courses and are taught by the same instructors. Curriculum areas cover a variety of subjects, including fire/injury prevention, public education, company tactical operations, incident command, health and safety, hazardous materials, and counterterrorism.
Off-campus two-day courses are co-sponsored jointly by the NFA and state and local fire training systems. Each year, state fire training agencies select two-day courses for delivery within their own state. If your fire department is interested in hosting one of these course deliveries, contact your state fire training agency.
States have the option of electing to use courses as train-the-trainer programs. Course materials are handed off in digital format to state training systems hosting train-the-trainer deliveries.
Information about application procedures, courses, dates and locations of deliveries is available through the off-campus two-day course schedule or by contacting your state fire training agency. Each state is responsible for all course admission procedures.
For general information about this program, contact the NFA’s Off-Campus Two-Day Program manager at 800- 238-3358, ext. 1301, or 301- 447-1301.
In addition to off-campus courses sponsored by the NFA for local delivery, the NFA makes available to state and local partners course content, such as instructor guides, student manuals, course videos, etc., for select two-, six- and 10-day NFA courses. States have sole control and responsibility to deliver these courses and may use NFA instructors.
States may report student participation in all courses for inclusion in the NFA student database. Students who take a state- or local partner-sponsored course receive an NFA certificate of completion.
Available courses are listed in the NFA course catalog. For information about course offerings, application procedures, course dates and locations of deliveries, contact your state fire training agency.
