College Credit and CEUs for National Fire Academy Courses

Information about how to obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and college credit for National Fire Academy (NFA) courses.

NFA courses are independently reviewed to ensure academic rigor and integrity. Although NFA is not an accredited institution, the courses you take through NFA may be considered for college credit. Credit transfer policies vary by institution, so you should request a credit evaluation by the institution where you plan to pursue your degree.

College credit

NFA courses are reviewed by the American Council on Education (ACE) to make college credit equivalency recommendations.

The American Council on Education's Learning Evaluations (formerly CREDIT®) Review is a thorough process during which a team of faculty evaluators from relevant academic disciplines review courses or exams, and if appropriate, make college credit recommendations that may be eligible for transfer into degree programs. Actual credit awarded is solely at the discretion of the college or university.

NFA course descriptions include the ACE CREDIT recommendation for credit hours, curricula and level. To access the recommendations for individual NFA courses, visit The ACE National Guide and enter the course code or course title in the “Search the National Guide” field. A list of all NFA courses with credit recommendations is also available on the ACE website. New courses not yet evaluated for college credit will be included in the next annual review.

ACE has partnered with Credly to provide you with digital credentials (badges) and transcripts on their Acclaim platform. To have NFA courses that you passed listed on your ACE transcript, you must request a badge for each course from the National Emergency Training Center Admissions Office.

Once we've issued and you have accepted a badge, you can use Acclaim to create your profile and send an official academic transcript directly to a college or university to see if they will grant you transfer credit. You can also share your badges through LinkedIn and other social media channels.

Request course badges
Due to the ACE review cycle, some Credly badges may not be available at the time of request.

For instructions on accepting badges, creating your profile and sending transcripts, visit Credly's Acclaim platform Help Center. If you already have a transcript from ACE's CREDIT service with courses from other providers, you may need to contact the ACE Student Resource Center to get your new accomplishments added to your transcript.

Continuing Education Units

NFA awards CEUs through the International Association for Continuing Education and Training for successful completion of NFA-sponsored courses offered on-campus, off-campus and online. A CEU is a standard unit of measure, with one CEU representing 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education/training experience. The availability of CEUs is included in the course catalog on the Course Detail page for your specific course.

NFA is a preferred provider with the International Code Council's (ICC's) Preferred Provider Program. This program recognizes and promotes ICC-approved educational opportunities as they relate to codes, standards, building construction and other subject areas. Several NFA-sponsored courses are approved for CEUs through the ICC and are listed in their catalog.
