Fire departments provide invaluable services to communities nationwide. To understand their full role in a community, this topical report profiles fire department run activity as reported to the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) so far in the 2026 calendar year.

In 2026, the new NERIS platform replaced the legacy data system, known as the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). More than 19,000 fire departments have already onboarded to NERIS, and NERIS participation is expected to increase throughout 2026.

Over half (62%) of the reported calls required emergency medical services (EMS) from fire departments.


Only 4% of all reported fire department runs involved a fire.
