Overall trends
Overall trends for nonresidential building fires and losses for the 10-year period of 2015 to 2024 show the following:
- 15% increase in fires.

58% increase in deaths.
- In 2016, a fire in California at a former warehouse converted to mixed-use properties with an assembly area resulted in 35 deaths and contributed to the peak in fire deaths. In 2021, there were 5 reported multifatality fire incidents and 9 such incidents in both 2022 and 2023. These reported multifatality fire incidents may have contributed to the increase in the estimate of fire deaths.
